The village Community Council is awaiting to hear the out come of a Lottery application for £10,000 to provide funds for new sports facilities to be positioned on the Primary School Playground. Road works is to take place on Church Hill, to lay drainage on behalf of the developer building new houses at Church Triangle. The road will be affected for about 80m outside the church and telephone exchange. The intention is for the work, expected to last for three weeks, to be carried out under two-way traffic lights. You will have seen the work already in progress starting at the old Melrose Road and will continuing through the village centre until it joins up with a gas pipe the other side of A68 outside the Garden Centre. A good number of people turned out on Saturday to tidy up the village and pick up litter with over 30 bags being collected during the two hours. It was good to see people of all ages getting involved the yougest being around six years and the oldest is any body's guess !! Well done all - the village now looks a better place ... [more]

New Worship Arrangements: Newtown Church The Kirk Session has agreed to a change in the worship pattern at Newtown. For a trial period, over the winter, the service on the 4th Sunday of each month will be an evening service, beginning at 5pm. After four dry days disappointedly the day started with rain but the Event continued and despite the weather was a great success. The Pipe Band from Galashiels arrived and were prepared to walk along a very muddy path to the event centre by the river and played marvellously whilst people studied Glen wildlife, water bugs, watch spinning demonstration and electro fishing etc. Several of the ... Following the opening of the new path into Newtown Glen in Oct. some fifty trees were planted on 29th Nov. as a part of National Tree Planting week. The trees will enhance the path and provide more screening. This project was the first to be led by the Five Parishes Path Group.
